Our recent heat wave requires early learning centres like Buttercups to think about what reasonable precautions they must take to protect children from any harms that may be present because of the heat and sun!
Playing in a hot playground with hot surfaces can be harmful to children as their skin is thinner and more delicate than adults. The soles of their feet can burn even as they run across the playground. It’s not just their feet we need to think about as children sit, kneel, lay and roll around when they play outdoors!
Educators at Buttercups go through safety checklists before taking children outside to play and consult apps and management when deciding if the outside temperature is appropriate to take little ones outside.
We also recommend to check the temperature of equipment, softfall, artificial turf and surfaces in your garden before children go outside to play and set up play equipment and resources under shaded areas.
